The standard, in one paragraph
Every factual claim on this site is either traceable to a linked published source or is arithmetic we show our working for. Where neither is available, the page says we do not know. Nothing is written from memory, and no claim is made that a reader could not check.
Who writes this
Every page is written by Scooter M., an enthusiast rather than a credentialed astronomer. There is no editorial board, no expert panel and no medical or educational reviewer, and we do not imply otherwise anywhere on the site. The byline on each page names a real person and our structured data names the same person — what a reader is told and what a search engine is told are identical by design. More on the about page.
Sourcing rules
- Manufacturer pages are the primary source for every specification. Retailer listings are not used — they are frequently wrong and are edited without notice.
- Every product card links the exact page its figures came from, under the spec table, not in a bibliography at the bottom.
- Reading dates are recorded. Specifications were read on a stated date, and re-checked when a page is revised.
- Unpublished figures stay unpublished. If a manufacturer does not state a weight, we do not state one either.
- Arithmetic is shown, not asserted. Every computed figure on this site can be reproduced from the linked spec sheet with a calculator.
What we refuse to publish
- Testing claims. We have not tested these products. No page here says or implies that we have.
- Credentials we do not hold. No certifications, no professional affiliations, no 'reviewed by' line naming an expert who does not exist.
- Fabricated reviews or testimonials. There are none on this site. Not to fill a layout, not to balance a grid, not for any reason.
- Scores and star ratings. A number out of ten implies a comparison we have not run. Our structured data carries no rating either.
- Prices we cannot verify, and never a stale one — figures expire from the site automatically after 48 hours.
- Urgency and scarcity language. No countdowns, no 'selling fast', no invented deadlines.
- Links to products we would not recommend to a friend in the same circumstances.
How picks are chosen
Products are ranked by how likely they are to produce a good second night for the specific child a page is written about — which is a judgment, and we present it as one rather than dressing it up as a score. The reasoning is written out in full on every card, and the methodology page sets out the arithmetic behind it.
Every pick carries a real reason to skip it: a circumstance in which you should genuinely buy something else. Where a product is common enough that a buyer will meet it anyway and we think it is a bad purchase, we include it and say so, with the reasoning and no buy button.
Commercial relationships
Lens & Lightyear earns affiliate commission and nothing else. No sponsored content, no display advertising, no paid placements, no free products, and no manufacturer has ever seen a draft. Commission rates do not influence rank — several pages here recommend the cheaper option, and one recommends a category that pays us less. The full statement is on the affiliate disclosure.
Corrections
Errors get fixed, and we say that we fixed them. Because every specification here is traceable to a published page, most corrections take minutes. Report one to info@lensandlightyear.com or through the contact page.
- A factual error — corrected as soon as it is confirmed, with the page's modified date updated.
- A changed specification — if a manufacturer revises a spec, the page is revised and the reading date moves with it.
- A discontinued product — removed from picks and replaced, rather than left to rot into a dead link.
- A disagreement about judgment — we will happily argue about it, and we will publish the counter-argument if it is a good one.
Update cadence
Pages carry a published date and a last-modified date, and both are real. Those dates feed our sitemap, so inflating them would degrade our own indexing — an unusually direct incentive to keep them honest.
Prices refresh daily and automatically; editorial content is revised when a specification changes, a product is discontinued, or a reader tells us something is wrong. We do not bump dates on unchanged pages to look fresh.
AI and how these pages are written
Drafting on this site is assisted by software, and every published figure is checked against the linked manufacturer page before it goes live. We are telling you that because the alternative — implying a hand-typed provenance we cannot demonstrate — is exactly the kind of unverifiable claim the rest of this page rules out. The verification standard is what matters, and it is the same either way: a source you can open, or arithmetic you can redo.
