Why can't I see anything through my telescope?
Nine times out of ten nothing is broken. Here is what is actually wrong, in order.

I'm not an astronomer and I don't have a lab. I'm someone who's genuinely into this — I read the manuals, compile the published specs, and do the arithmetic the box doesn't do for you. No lab coat. How we pick.
The short answer
Almost nothing that fails on night one is a fault. In order of how often it happens: the finderscope was never aligned with the main tube, the highest-power eyepiece went in first, the target is too low in the sky, or nobody waited for their eyes to adapt to the dark. All four are fixable in the next ten minutes.

1. The finderscope is not aligned. This is the big one.
The small scope or red dot on the side of the tube is not decorative. It is how you aim, because the main eyepiece shows a piece of sky roughly the width of a pencil held at arm's length. If the finder is not pointing where the main tube is pointing, you are aiming a telescope at a sky you cannot see.
Finders are almost never aligned in the box, and they get knocked out of alignment in transit. Nothing in the packaging tells you this. It is the single most common reason a new telescope appears to be broken, and it is why we treat it as step two of the telescope setup checklist rather than an optional extra.
2. The wrong eyepiece went in first
The instinct is to reach for the eyepiece with the smallest number, because a smaller number means more magnification and more magnification sounds better. It is exactly backwards.
The number on an eyepiece is its focal length in millimeters, and magnification is the telescope's focal length divided by it. A 4mm eyepiece in a 600mm telescope gives 150x — and on a 50mm telescope, 150x is well past what the optics can resolve. You get a dim, mushy, jittery view of something unidentifiable, drifting fast enough to leave the field while you are still focusing.
Start with the largest number in the box, usually a 20mm or 25mm. The image is smaller, far brighter, much easier to find, and it holds still. We work through the magnification ceiling every telescope has on toy brands vs real optics.
3. Nobody waited for their eyes
Dark adaptation takes about twenty minutes for most of the effect and closer to forty for all of it, and a single glance at a phone screen resets it. This is not a marginal factor. On a faint object, the difference between an unadapted eye and an adapted one is the difference between seeing nothing and seeing it plainly.
The practical fix is a red light, because red preserves dark adaptation where white destroys it. A red torch is the cheapest genuine upgrade in this hobby, which is why it leads the stargazing night kit.
4. You are pointing at the wrong kind of thing
A first telescope has a short list of targets that work brilliantly and a long list that will disappoint. Pointing a 70mm telescope at a nebula that looked spectacular in a photograph is arranging a failure, because that photograph was a long exposure through a camera and the human eye cannot do long exposures.
- Start with the Moon. Bright, huge, unmistakable, and genuinely astonishing at 30x. Aim for a night when it is half full — the shadows along the terminator line are what make craters look three-dimensional.
- Then Jupiter. Even a small telescope shows a disc with up to four moons in a line beside it. Those moons visibly move from night to night, which is the thing that hooks children.
- Then Saturn. The rings resolve from about 50x in a 70mm telescope. It is small, and it is still the moment most people remember.
- Not galaxies, not nebulae, not on night one. In a beginner telescope they are faint gray smudges that need a dark sky and a fully adapted eye. Save them for later, when the child already believes.

5. The tripod is the problem, not the optics
Mount stiffness is the most under-reported specification in the category — no manufacturer publishes a number for it — and it sends more cheap telescopes to the cupboard than any optical failure does.
The symptom is unmistakable: you touch the focuser and the view jumps, then takes several seconds to settle. At high power it may never settle. Three things help, all of them free. Shorten the tripod legs. Hang a bag from the center of the tripod to damp vibration. And let go of the telescope completely before you look. We cover the trade honestly on tabletop vs tripod.
6. It is genuinely faulty — rarely, but it happens
Work through everything above first, because a returned telescope that was merely misaligned is a wasted evening and a delayed birthday. Real faults look like this: the focuser cannot reach focus at either extreme with the supplied eyepieces, an obvious rattle from inside the tube, or a lens or mirror visibly loose in its cell.

- Why is everything black through my new telescope?
- Check the lens cap, then the finder alignment. A telescope shows a very small piece of sky, so if the finder is not aligned with the tube you are almost certainly pointed at empty sky.
- Why does my telescope only show a blurry white circle?
- That is an out-of-focus star, or the Moon at too much magnification. Switch to the eyepiece with the largest number and turn the focuser slowly through its full travel.
- Should I use the Barlow lens that came with the telescope?

- Can you see planets with a cheap kids' telescope?
- Yes. Jupiter with its moons and Saturn with its rings are both within reach of a 70mm telescope at modest magnification. Galaxies and nebulae mostly are not, whatever the packaging implies.
