The pair that gets used on a Tuesday afternoon, not only on a clear Saturday night.

The short answer
Buy the Nature DX if the binoculars will be used in daylight as well as at night. It is a third lighter than a 7x50, waterproof, has enough eye relief for a child in glasses, and focuses down to 6.5 feet. Buy a 7x50 instead if stargazing is the entire point — it delivers about three times the light.
This pair sits in an awkward place in the category. Astronomy lists skip it for being small; birding lists skip it for being cheap. For a child it is arguably the most-used binocular on this site, and the reason has nothing to do with optical quality.
The one number that decides it: exit pupil
Exit pupil is the width of the cone of light leaving the eyepiece, and it is simply the objective diameter divided by the magnification. It is the specification that predicts night-time brightness, and almost nobody explains it at the shelf.

Exit pupils are Celestron's published figures. The light column is our arithmetic — the ratio of the exit pupil areas, which is the ratio of the diameters squared. A fully dark-adapted young pupil opens to about 7mm, so anything wider than that is light the eye cannot use.
That table is why we do not call the Nature DX a stargazing binocular. It is also why an adult should not assume the 7x50 is three times better for them: an adult over about forty typically dilates to 5mm or less, so a good deal of that 7.1mm cone never enters the eye at all. This is one of the rare cases where the child gets more out of the hardware than the grown-up does.

What the extra money is actually buying
The Nature DX costs meaningfully more than the porro pairs on this site, and none of that premium is light. Here is where it goes.
- Weight. 18 oz against 27.3 oz. The single biggest predictor of whether a child uses binoculars twice.
- Eye relief. 17.5mm, against 12-13mm on the porro pairs. This is the glasses number: too little and a child wearing them sees a small circle in the middle of a black surround.
- Waterproof and nitrogen filled, not water resistant. Nitrogen filling is what stops the inside fogging when a warm pair meets cold night air.
- Close focus at 6.5 feet, against 23-26 feet on the porros. This is what makes them a daytime instrument for insects, flowers and garden birds.
- Phase-coated BaK-4 roof prisms. Roof prisms need phase coating to keep the image sharp, and it is an expensive process — which is precisely why cheap roof binoculars are usually worse than cheap porro ones.
What a child will actually see with 8x32
- The Moon: craters along the terminator line, clearly. Excellent, from anywhere, including a city.
- Jupiter: the disc plus up to four moons as points of light beside it. Visible, though smaller than at 10x.
- The Pleiades: the whole cluster inside a 7.4 degree field with room to spare. This is what binoculars do better than any telescope.
- The Orion Nebula: a faint gray patch on a dark night. Present, but this is where the 4mm exit pupil costs you.
- Andromeda: difficult. A 7x50 from a dark garden is a much better tool for it.
- By day: genuinely good. Garden birds, distant hills, sports, and anything from 6.5 feet away upward.

The arithmetic
32 / 8 = 4mm exit pupil — dimmer at night than either 50mm pair above, and that is the honest trade. What you get for it: 18 oz instead of 27, which a seven-year-old can actually hold steady; 17.5mm of eye relief, so a child in glasses sees the full field; 6.5 ft close focus, so it works on a ladybird in the garden as well as the Moon; and genuinely waterproof rather than water resistant. This is the pair that gets used on Tuesday afternoon, not just on a clear Saturday night.
Almost every list of astronomy binoculars ignores this pair because it is small. That is the wrong lens to judge it through: the question for a child is not which binocular is optically best, it is which one leaves the house.
18 oz against the 27.3 oz of a 7x50 is a third less weight, and that is the difference between a seven-year-old holding them steady and a seven-year-old putting them down. Weight is the specification that decides use.
Three numbers do real work here. **17.5mm of eye relief** means a child in glasses sees the whole field with them on — the porro pairs below manage 12 to 13mm, which does not. **6.5 ft close focus** turns them into a tool for a ladybird on a leaf, not just a distant hill. And **waterproof with nitrogen filling** rather than merely water resistant means dew, grass and a dropped bag are survivable.
The optics are a step up in kind as well as price: BaK-4 roof prisms with phase coatings and fully multi-coated lenses. Phase coating is a real thing that costs real money and it is why the image looks crisper than the price-per-millimeter suggests.
Skip it if
Stargazing is the whole point. A 4mm exit pupil is meaningfully dimmer than a 7x50's 7.1mm, and none of the extra money here is buying you light. For a child who only wants the night sky, this is the wrong pair.

Celestron Cometron 7x50
Night sky first, everything else second
The arithmetic
Exit pupil is objective divided by magnification: 50 / 7 = 7.1mm, which matches Celestron's published figure. That is the single most useful number here. A fully dark-adapted young pupil opens to around 7mm, so a child uses nearly all of that 7.1mm cone and the view is as bright as the optics can make it. An adult over about forty typically dilates to 5mm or less and simply cannot use the extra — this is one of the rare cases where a child gets more out of the hardware than the grown-up does.
If the gift is about stars, this is the better buy and it costs less. The exit pupil arithmetic is the whole argument: 50 / 7 = 7.1mm, and a fully dark-adapted young pupil opens to around 7mm.
Set against the Nature DX's 4mm, the difference in light delivered to the eye is the ratio of the areas — (7.1 / 4) squared, or about **3.2 times as much**. On a faint star cluster that is not a subtlety, it is the difference between seeing it and not.
What you give up is everything the Nature DX is good at by day: it is heavier, it is only water resistant, its close focus is 26.2 ft, and its 13mm eye relief is awkward over glasses. [Full review](/binoculars/celestron-cometron-7x50).
Skip it if
The child is under about eight, or will be holding them unsupported for long. 27.3 oz is genuinely heavy for small arms and the fix is to lie down or lean on something.

Celestron Celestron Kids 4x30
Four to six year olds, where weight beats everything
The arithmetic
4.7 oz is the whole point: about a sixth of the weight of a 7x50, which is the difference between a four-year-old using them and a four-year-old putting them down. 30 / 4 = 7.5mm exit pupil, so the view is bright. But 4x is genuinely low magnification — this is a first pair of real optics for very small hands, not a stargazing instrument.
Below about six, the Nature DX's 18 oz is still too much for arms held up at the sky for more than a minute.
4.7 oz solves that and nothing else on this site does. 30 / 4 gives a 7.5mm exit pupil so the image is bright and forgiving of a wandering eye — which matters when the user cannot yet hold a steady line of sight.
The honest limitation is the magnification, and it belongs here rather than in small print: this is a first pair of real optics, a stepping stone to [binoculars by age](/binoculars/by-age), not an astronomy instrument.
Skip it if
You want stargazing. At 4x the Moon is a slightly larger Moon; craters do not resolve the way they do at 7x or 8x.

- Are the Celestron Nature DX 8x32 good for stargazing?
- They work, but they are not the best choice for it. The 4mm exit pupil delivers roughly a third of the light a 7x50 puts into a child's dark-adapted eye. Buy them for daytime-and-night use, not for astronomy alone.
- Are the Nature DX 8x32 good for kids?
- Yes, and unusually so. At 18 oz they are a third lighter than a typical astronomy pair, they are waterproof, and 17.5mm of eye relief means a child in glasses sees the full field.

- Yes. The published 17.5mm eye relief is generous enough to see the whole field with glasses on, which the 12-13mm porro pairs on this site cannot manage.
