The short answer
An optical planetarium shines light through an etched disc, putting real cataloged stars in their real positions. A decorative galaxy projector uses LEDs and lasers to throw attractive patterns. Both are sold as star projectors. Only the first teaches a child anything about the sky.
This is the single most useful distinction in the whole star-projector category, and almost no listing makes it. Both types use the same words — starry, galaxy, planetarium, constellation — and both photograph well. The difference only becomes obvious after you own one.
How to tell them apart before you buy

Why the accurate ones cost more
The expensive part of an optical planetarium is the disc and the lens. Producing an etched disc with tens of thousands of correctly positioned points, and a lens that keeps them sharp across a whole ceiling, is genuine precision manufacturing.
A decorative projector needs none of that. LEDs, a spinning textured film and a diffuser produce an attractive result cheaply, and the money instead goes into features: app control, speakers, brightness, scene modes.
So the two halves of the category are not competing on quality. They are competing on entirely different axes, and the more expensive one has fewer features by design.
Which one should you actually buy?
This comes down to one honest question about the child, and it is the same question we ask on the gifts hub: are they interested in space, or interested in the idea of space?

What neither type can do
Replace a telescope. This needs saying because the price overlap invites the substitution, and because children spot the difference immediately.
A projector shows a picture of the sky. A telescope shows the sky — actual photons that left Jupiter forty minutes ago and landed on the child's retina. That distinction sounds abstract until you watch a child understand it, at which point it becomes the entire point of the hobby. We lay the choice out fully on star projector versus telescope.

The arithmetic
The number that separates this from every colorful nebula projector is 60,000 — because those are cataloged stars in their real positions, not a decorative pattern. It means a child can find Orion on their ceiling and then find the same Orion out of the window, which is the only thing a projector can do that genuinely helps with a telescope.
This is what an optical planetarium is: light through an etched disc and a real glass lens, producing stars in the positions they actually occupy.
Over 60,000 of them, across a projection roughly 290 cm across at a throw distance between 140 and 270 cm. A 5 W LED does the work, and the unit is 160 x 160 x 150 mm.
What that buys you is the one thing a projector can genuinely do for a young astronomer: recognition. A child who finds Orion on their ceiling can find Orion out of the window, and the second one is far more likely to happen because of the first.
It has no speaker, no app, no color cycling and no aurora mode. Discs are interchangeable, there is rotation and a sleep timer, and that is the whole feature list. This is a serious instrument in a small box, and it costs several times what a decorative projector does.

The child has been shown swirling purple galaxy videos and is expecting that. This projects white points of light on a dark ceiling, which is what the real sky looks like — and some children find that quieter than they hoped for.

Accurate: the affordable version
The arithmetic
8,000 real stars and 61 named constellations, adjustable to a specific date and time — so you can set it to the sky outside tonight and then go and find the same thing. That is the useful trick. Note the manufacturer's own age guidance of 14 and up: this is a mechanism with small parts and fiddly discs, not a nursery night light, whatever the shelf it sits on suggests.
The accurate half of the category at a much lower price, with correspondingly lower star density.
8,000 stars and 61 named constellations across two discs, with a date-and-time adjustment. That adjustment is the useful part: you can set it to tonight's actual sky, find a constellation on the ceiling, and then go outside and find the same one.
Dual motors give six speeds of motion, there is a shooting-star function, and auto shut-off runs at 30, 60 or 120 minutes. It takes three AA batteries, supplied, or a 5 V DC cable that is not.
Bresser's stated age guidance is 14 and up, which we read as being about small parts and disc handling rather than comprehension. A younger child will love it with an adult managing the discs.
Skip it if
You need it to throw across a big room. The maximum projection distance is 3 m, and the image is 1.6 x 2.1 m at 2 m — fine over a bed, not enough for a high or wide ceiling.

A middle path between an accurate planetarium and a decorative light. The disc system means you can run a real star field one night and a nebula the next, and the focus wheel is large enough for a child to work themselves — which matters more than it sounds, because a projector nobody can focus gets switched off. No speaker and no app is a feature in a bedroom, not a gap.
The genuinely useful compromise, and the reason this page is not a simple binary.
It is a disc-based optical projector, like the accurate ones, but the disc library covers both halves of the category: a real star field one night, a nebula or an aurora the next. The lens is 2 megapixel with 5K discs, and the star disc carries around 40,326 stars.

The arithmetic
25 dB is the specification that matters in a child's bedroom and the one nobody checks — roughly the level of a quiet library, which is quiet enough to fall asleep next to. 540 sq ft of coverage will fill an ordinary bedroom ceiling with room to spare.
